Birdwatching around Sarasota Florida with Rick Greenspun

If you are in central Florida for a few days, why not join Rick
and let him show you some fabulous birds in his home territory.

Rick suggests the following for a 1 Day Bird Guiding Itinerary (Winter - Nov/Feb).
Early pick up at your hotel/residence and a short ride to one of Sarasota's premiere birding hotspots: the Celery Fields. The Celery Fields are 300 acres of wetlands, impoundments and grasslands, where we can expect to see Roseate Spoonbill, Wood Stork, Purple Gallinule, Least Bittern, Limpkin, Black bellied Whistling Duck, Tri-colored and Little Blue Herons, White and Glossy Ibis, Bald Eagle and migrant/wintering sandpipers as well as possible Sedge and Marsh Wrens, Swamp Sparrow and others.

"Roseate Spoonbill in for a landing"

From the Celery Fields we head south to Oscar Scherer State Park in search of Florida's only endemic species, the Florida Scrub Jay. Also at the park we can expect to see Red-headed, Red-bellied, Downy and Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Towhee, Red-shouldered Hawk, Blue-headed and White-eyed Vireo, as well as wintering warblers like Yellow-throated, Black and White, Palm, Yellow-rumped and Pines.

"Snail Kite"

The next stop, believe it or not is the county Landfill. One of the best spots to see as many as 15 Bald Eagles in various plumages, Eastern Bluebird, Sandhill Cranes and if we are lucky, Brown-headed Nuthatch. It is also a good place to look for a rare gull or tern amongst the thousands of gulls that congregate there.
If time remains, we will head west to Sarasota Bay or one of the area beaches for wintering shorebirds that include Black-bellied, Snowy, Piping, Semi-palmated and Wilson's plovers. Red Knots, Reddish Egret (both the Red and White morph), Northern Gannets, Black Skimmers, Common Loons and Monk and Black-hooded Parakeets.
Tour ends and return to your hotel/residence.

Testimonials.
My wife and I had the opportunity to bird with Rick for 4 days in Florida in the Tampa Bay area in February 2011. Rick has excellent and up to date information on birds and their migratory schedules and paths. He was always first to be ready at our bed and breakfast accommodation. He is arguably the best guide I have ever come across while travelling to different countries and already I have recommended Rick to many birders. BK. Sinha
